LAPD Chief Rejects Newsom’s Mask Ban, Calls It ‘Insane’ Public Policy

We all know the drill. Being a cop in a deep-blue city has become an almost impossible job, and it’s not by accident. For years, we’ve watched radical politicians wage a quiet war on law enforcement. They pass laws that favor criminals, slash budgets for police, and foster a culture of contempt for the very people who run toward danger.

This relentless campaign has real consequences. It forces good officers to hesitate, looking over their shoulders not for armed suspects but for political activists and opportunistic prosecutors. When leaders value a progressive talking point more than an officer’s life, they make the streets more dangerous for everyone. But every now and then, a spark of sanity cuts through the progressive nonsense. This time, it came from Los Angeles.

“The reality of one armed agency approaching another armed agency to create conflict over something that would be a misdemeanor at best or an infraction, it doesn’t make any sense,” said LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. “It’s not a good public policy decision and it wasn’t well thought out in my opinion.”

Chief McDonnell was responding to Governor Gavin Newsom’s new California law, which prohibits federal ICE agents from wearing masks to protect their identities. Instead of saluting the radical political machine in Sacramento, Chief McDonnell showed a rare act of genuine backbone by announcing his department will not enforce the insane rule.

McDonnell correctly sees that ordering his officers to confront armed federal agents over a piece of cloth is a recipe for violent, pointless conflict. And he’s not alone. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also publicly refused to enforce the ban, forming a united front of law enforcement professionals against the governor’s dangerous political posturing.

When Governor Newsom signed this reckless bill, he sneered, “What are you afraid of?” Well, Gavin, let’s spell it out: The Department of Homeland Security has reported that assaults against ICE agents have exploded by over 1,000 percent. These federal officers and their families are being hunted, their home addresses published online, and they are facing escalating threats of violence.

Newsom’s law was never about “transparency.” It’s a deliberate tool to help radical extremists identify, harass, and target federal officers. It’s a disgusting political game played with the lives of brave patriots who are simply doing their job. While federal agents put their lives on the line, Newsom is working to paint a target on their backs.

This entire charade isn’t just dangerous; it’s a flagrant violation of how our country is supposed to work. The Constitution is perfectly clear: federal law supersedes state law, especially on an issue like immigration enforcement. A state governor does not get to dictate safety protocols to federal law enforcement.

The Trump administration rightly sued California months ago to strike down this unconstitutional law. This necessary stand reminds rogue governors like Newsom that they are not kings of their own private fiefdoms. They remain part of the United States of America and are subject to its laws.
