American men’s hockey team defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime to claim Olympic gold, while the women’s team also secured victory over Canada. Both teams have accepted President Donald Trump’s invitation to attend Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
The athletes received a congratulatory call from the president on Saturday following their victories. During the call, Trump praised goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for his outstanding performance and confirmed that both teams would be honored at the White House.
When asked about the invitation, one player immediately responded with “We’re in,” indicating their eagerness to represent their country.
The president also assured the athletes that travel arrangements would be made regardless of weather conditions: “The nice thing about being president is I can tell you, you don’t have to worry about the weather or land.”
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers have been refusing to attend the State of the Union address.
