The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus has withdrawn its endorsement of Shelly Kates Headen, the Democratic candidate for state representative in District 62 who is challenging incumbent Republican state representative John Blust. The decision follows a series of social media posts made by Headen that were described as unacceptable and inconsistent with the values expected of Democratic candidates.
In one post, Headen wrote: “I’m so excited! Ready for the MAGAs to die off!!” Another post called for military strikes on states such as Alabama and Louisiana, which she labeled as home to “stupid” citizens. A caucus spokesperson stated that Headen shared an image from the Dachau concentration camp—a Nazi facility where approximately 41,500 people perished—with a caption suggesting Trump supporters belonged there. She also claimed America was “beyond peaceful protest” following the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
When questioned about the posts, Headen stated she “can’t remember” making them. The caucus emphasized that Headen’s remarks do not reflect the values expected of its candidates and have withdrawn support. Headen remains on the ballot for District 62, and absentee voting has already begun under state law.
