Virginia’s 22 Violent Crimes by Illegal Immigrants: A Direct Result of Gov. Spanberger’s Sanctuary Policies

There was a time when Americans could rely on one basic promise from their government: it would protect them. Not micromanage their lives, not redistribute their earnings—just keep them safe from people who mean harm. That promise transcended party lines for generations. But in states where progressive ideology now drives the agenda, that protection has been compromised.

Virginia—the birthplace of the Constitution and home of Jefferson and Madison—has become a case study when a governor prioritizes political identity over public safety. Under Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger, the state has implemented sanctuary policies shielding criminal illegal immigrants from federal enforcement. These actions have led to escalating violence.

Critics have raised concerns about Virginia’s increasing violent incidents after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requested that the state not release Mexican national Freddi Chigo Mil following his arrest for allegedly stabbing two women in Staunton on August 30. Police found Mil at the scene of the attack; one victim died, while the other was hospitalized.

The same day, ICE arrested Salvadoran national Yinmi Molina-Zepeda in Woodbridge, who is wanted in his home country for aggravated homicide. Two violent illegal immigrants—two Virginia communities—one calendar day.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Virginia has documented 22 cases of violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants this year. These offenses include child pornography, sex offenses against children, murder, rape, and abduction.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that Virginia has become a state where sanctuary policies allow dangerous individuals to remain in communities. Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities, described Governor Spanberger’s actions as “pro-criminal” rather than pro-immigrant.

The fundamental duty of any governor is to safeguard the people who elected her. When state government obstructs federal efforts to remove violent criminals from communities, it has failed its citizens. Virginia voters will eventually have the opportunity to address these issues at the ballot box.
