There are places in this country that aren’t just stone and metal. They’re altars. War memorials stand as permanent testimony to young men who stormed beaches and bled out in foreign soil so the rest of us could grow old in freedom. Every weathered bronze face carries the weight of a mother’s telegram she never wanted to open.
So when someone deliberately destroys the likeness of a Marine who fought and died for this nation, it isn’t vandalism. It’s desecration. And what just happened at one of America’s most iconic military monuments should ignite a fury in every patriotic heart still beating.
An illegal immigrant from Mexico allegedly took a sledgehammer to the famous Iwo Jima monument outside Marine Corps Base Quantico late Wednesday, knocking the head clean off one of the Marines in the flag-raising scene.
Prince William County police caught Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, mid-swing at about 10:15 p.m., pounding away at the limestone memorial with his sledgehammer. Police report that the damage will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Mid-swing. Officers arrived and this man was still hammering away. One Marine figure was beheaded. A second lost its bayonet from its rifle. A third had its helmet and face gouged and chipped beyond recognition. Restoration experts state that repairing the limestone sculpture will be extraordinarily complex with no timeline established yet.
Maldonado Soriano is currently held without bail on felony charges for destruction of property, injury to a monument, and trespassing.
Federal records indicate that Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally in December 1999 as a child. He received DACA protection under Barack Obama in 2014 and had his status renewed by Joe Biden’s administration in 2024. His DACA status expired in August when the Trump administration declined to extend it.
