Mamdani’s Endorsed Candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier Arrested at UN Protests Against Netanyahu

In American politics, an arrest once ended careers before they began. But New York City has become a testing ground for candidates whose radical activism trumps conventional political responsibility.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Darializa Avila Chevalier, a socialist House candidate in New York, for Congress. The mayor recently praised her commitment to working-class New Yorkers and pledged to fight alongside her on shared issues.

On Thursday, Chevalier was arrested while protesting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the United Nations during its General Assembly meeting. Photos from social media and public reports confirmed her detention after demonstrators blocked a roadway near the UN.

Chevalier, 32, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. She defeated five-term Democratic incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in June’s primary election. She is widely expected to win the general election in her deep-blue district.

Mamdani’s endorsement, supported by the DSA’s New York City chapter, helped transform Chevalier from a campus activist into a major-party nominee. Her activism includes leading anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, where she co-founded the Columbia University Apartheid Divestment Campaign.

The campaign stated: “Our government has unlimited funds to arm a genocide against Palestinians but tells us there’s nothing left to feed and house our own people.” Chevalier also said Netanyahu “belongs at the Hague, not in the streets of New York City.”

Approximately 80-100 protesters were arrested during Thursday’s demonstrations. City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were among those detained.

Chevalier’s campaign immediately highlighted her arrest on social media without acknowledging legal repercussions, framing it as an act of defiance.
