There was a time in American politics — not even that long ago — when certain boundaries were understood. You could question an opponent’s record, their judgment, or their fitness for office. But you did not drag their spouse into public disputes.
On Sunday during CNN’s “State of the Union,” Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed described President Donald Trump as an “overlord” and claimed his marriage to First Lady Melania Trump is on a “rocky road.”
Host Jake Tapper referenced a recent social media post by Trump showing him with Melania in formal attire. El-Sayed responded: “Yes, you got two different visions of America. Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries?”
